Farmer Health Screenings

In New York State, findings from a recent statewide study of farmers, farm workers, and farm family members revealed:

• A high rate of hearing loss
• An increased prevalence of skin cancer and pre-cancerous lesions
• An increased exposure to dust and environmental allergens
• An increased rate of arthritis of the knee, shoulder and hip

NYCAMH promotes safe and healthy farming by offering health screenings to farm families in the following areas:

• Hearing
• Breathing
• Respirator fit-testing
• Skin cancer
• Vision

NYCAMH can offer these health screenings in your community with a minimum of 25 farmers attending.

At the time of the screening, NYCAMH offers preventive education to the participants. This education includes use of personal protective equipment such as hearing, breathing, eye and skin protection. We place emphasis on environmental controls as a method of reducing exposure.

Farmer's Clinic

Staff from NYCAMH offer this service at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, New York.

This fee-for-service program assists you and your health care provider with consultations related to farm health problems.

• The Farmer's Clinic is staffed by physicians and occupational health nurses
• Clinical assessments are performed
• Education and prevention services are provided
• Most health insurance plans are accepted
• No cost on farm assessments offered to assess work-related health and safety issues
