Agricultural Health Nurse

The Agricultural Health Nurse program is a team of occupational health nurses with expertise in agricultural health and safety. The nurses work with other health professionals as well as farm families to prevent agricultural illness, injury and death. The program focuses on the following areas:
  • Severe injuries
  • Fatalities
  • Respiratory disorders
  • Chemical poisonings
  • Other related areas (e.g., severe stress)

The Agricultural Nurse Surveillance Program allows nurses in New York State to provide site visits following a farm injury or fatality. The nurses rely on reports of injuries and/or fatalities from rural health care providers, extension agents, farmers, or media reports. Follow-up includes gathering information offering support, making appropriate referrals, and providing advice regarding prevention of future injuries. The nurses specific areas of focus are severe injuries, fatalities, respiratory illnesses related to farming, and chemical poisonings.

Information gathered is strictly confidential. The nurses are frequently involved in safety day camps, and educational activities aimed at farm children and farm safety. Outreach activities include health screenings, and presentations on pertinent health and safety issues in farming.
