Nationally, over 100 children are killed and
33,000 children are injured each year in farm-related accidents. In New York
State, an average of 7 children are killed and 27 children are injured each year in farm related accidents.
NYCAMH promotes safe and healthy farming to children by providing the following educational services:
- Animal Safety: demonstrations showing mass/force of large animals, peripheral vision, etc.
- Bending and Lifting: demonstrations on how to do the job correctly and prevent muscle injury
- Chemical Safety: demonstrations on how chemicals can harm
- Disability Awareness: demonstrations showing what it is like to be disabled
- Farm Safety 4 Just Kids (FS4JK) Hazard Board: interactive display to identify farm hazards
- First Aid: demonstrations showing simple bandaging, stopping blood flow, spreading germs
- Mechanical Safety: demonstration showing pinch, sheer, wrap, crush, pull-in points and stored energy
- North American Guidelines for Children’s Agricultural Tasks
(NAGCAT): Based on developmental maturity, these guidelines cover animal care, haying operations, manual labor, tractor fundamentals, and more. The guidelines are available from
Gempler's at 800.382.8473, and can be viewed on the NAGCAT
Web site. In New York State, Sue Ackerman from NYCAMH is available to provide
in-service training on the use of the guidelines, through a slide presentation. Any training group of 15 or more adults will receive a free set of the guidelines for their group or county. Call Sue at

- Reaction Timer: demonstration showing how reaction times may not be fast enough to prevent injury
- Silo Gas: demonstration on how this deadly gas flows from a silo
- Sun Sense: talk on sun safety and
skin cancer
- Tractor Safety: demonstration showing rollovers, use of
ROPS, etc.
