The NYCAMH Library and Information Center is
a unique occupational health resource for agricultural health and safety
information. Created in 1988, the Center provides information services to
health professionals and organizations, community organizations,
libraries, businesses and rural citizens seeking to improve health and
safety in agriculture and other rural-based occupations.
The Library maintains a specialized collection of topics ranging from Allergy to Zoonosis in a variety of formats including monographs, serials, slides, and videotapes. Electronic database access includes: NIOSH, OSHA, MSDS, and the National Ag Safety Disc (NASD). An affiliate of Bassett Healthcare of Cooperstown, the NYCAMH Library is located at the Chamberlain center on Route 28 in Fly Creek, New York and is open by appointment Monday - Friday 8:30 to 4:30. For more information, contact Bernadette Hodge (Information Specialist) at 800.343.7527 or 607.547.6023, or via e-mail at bhodge@nycamh.com. Other Library Activities During 1998 to 2000, as part of a grant opportunity, the NYCAMH Library formed a partnership with a public library system to address the information needs of farmers in a nearby community. Working together with several community organizations, the libraries combined their leadership, resources, and expertise to conduct a successful outreach effort that saved a village library, improved community relations, enhanced awareness of the role of libraries, and disseminated information necessary for sustaining a viable and healthy farming community. A complete description of this experience was published as part of a book on outreach and education for special and academic libraries and it was also an article in a librarian journal: Grassroots to Grassfed: Libraries Partner with Local Organizations to Address the Information Needs of Farming Communities in Upstate New York. Hodge, B. and Tanner, R. (2003) in Outreach Services in Academic and Special Libraries, Eds. Kelsey, P. and Kelsey S. The Haworth Information Press, Binghamton, NY and co-published in (2003) The Reference Librarian, No. 82, 107-124. |
